Stalin writes to EAM seeking release of TN fishermen from Lankan custody

Chennai, Sep 29 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday night wrote to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar urging him to take strong and effective diplomatic measures to prevent the arrest of TN fishermen and to secure the release of all those arrested and their boats from the Sri Lankan authorities. In a Demi-Official letter to Dr Jaishankar, the Chief Minister drew his attention to yet another incident involving the apprehension of 17 fishermen and their boats near Neduntheevu today by the Sri Lankan Navy. These fishermen had ventured for fishing from the Rameswaram fish landing centre on Saturday. "The detention of our fishermen and the confiscation of their boats cause serious distress and uncertainty among the coastal communities", he said. "I have repeatedly reiterated that concrete and proactive steps must be taken to resolve this festering issue diplomatically", Mr Stalin said. "Considering the gravity of the situation, I have also submitted this as one of the requests in the memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27", he pointed out. "I, therefore, request you to initiate strong and effective diplomatic measures to prevent the arrest of our fishermen and to secure the immediate release of all the arrested fishermen and their fishing boats from the Sri Lankan authorities", Mr Stalin added...////...
