Talks with US progressing very well, says Goyal after Trump pauses higher tariff

Mumbai, Apr 10 (Reporter) As US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariff, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said talks with the US are progressing well and India is efficiently handling the tariff related issues. "India is already handling this issue (trade tariff with the US) very efficiently from the beginning itself. Prime Minister Modi and President Trump had taken this decision in February itself that the two countries would sign a bilateral agreement which will make trade simple and take the two-way trade to $500 billion which is 2.5 times higher from now," Goyal said. The Minister said that the proposed trade agreement will boost job opportunities for the citizens, further strengthening the economy. "Our discussion (with the US) is progressing very well," Goyal said. The Commerce MInister had on Wednesday held a meeting with stakeholders of various Export Promotion Councils and industry associations and apprised them on the ongoing discussions with the US for a mutually beneficial multi sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). "Encouraged them to take the long term view of India-US trade and economic ties while making their commercial decisions and assured them that the government will work to provide a conducive environment to enable them to successfully navigate the recent changes in the global trade environment," the Minister wrote on 'X' after the meeting. After announcing to slap import duty ranging from 10% to 50% on imports from all trading partners earlier this month, US President Trump has now in a surprise move paused higher tariffs for most countries except China.
