Khammam (Telangana), Sep 3 (Reporter) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday attributed the heavy flooding in Khammam to illegal encroachments in the area. During his visit to the flood-affected regions in the district, the Chief Minister addressed the media, stating that the retaining wall of the Munneru stream would be raised after consulting with engineers. He also emphasized that encroachments would be removed following a mapping exercise in coordination with the Survey of India. The district recorded an unprecedented 42 cm of rainfall, a figure never seen before in its history. The Chief Minister noted that the government's high-alert measures had helped minimize the loss of life due to the floods. Expressing his frustration, the Chief Minister criticized former Minister and BRS leader Harish Rao for his comments on the floods. He urged Harish Rao to address the issue of encroachments by his fellow BRS leader Puvvada Ajay Kumar, who allegedly constructed a hospital on encroached land. The Chief Minister called on Harish Rao to advocate for the removal of such illegal structures. Reddy further mentioned that the state government had written to the central government seeking assistance. On behalf of the state government, he announced a Rs 5 lakh aid for the families of those who lost their lives due to the floods. Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister visited Sitaram Nayak Thanda in Mahabubabad district, where he described the situation as a tragic consequence of nature's fury. He acknowledged that the government had taken measures to mitigate the damage, but there was still significant loss of life and property. He instructed the district collector to assess the situation and submit a report to the government to consider elevating the three tandas, including Sitaram Nayake Thanda, to village panchayat status. The Chief Minister also announced that orders would be issued to build new houses for the residents of the three tandas under the Indiramma housing scheme. Essential supplies will be provided to the flood victims for the next 10 days, and the Collector has been directed to prepare a list of those who lost important documents due to the floods and ensure they receive the necessary replacements.
