Telangana LS polls: 24.31 pc voting in 4 hrs

Hyderabad, May 13 (Reporter) Polling picked pace considerably in 17 Lok Sabha seats of Telangana following very low voting in the first two hours on Monday. An estimated 24.31 per cent of 3.31 crore voters cast their votes till 11 am in the fourth and single phase election to the 17 parliamentary constituencies, the poll panel said. Highest polling was recorded in Zahirabad at 31.83 per cent, followed by Mahabubabad (30.70), Khammam (31.56) and Adilabad (31.51) while voting is progressing slowly in Hyderabad with 10.70 per cent being recorded till 11 am. Polling for the 17 Lok Sabha seats and bypoll in Secunderabad assembly constituency in Telangana is underway with voters standing in queues to exercise their franchise. However, by election to Secunderabad cantonment assembly constituency the percentage of polling up till 11 am is 16.34 per cent. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vikas Raj, who cast his vote at Adarsha polling booth in SR Nagar in the city, said overall voting was continuing peacefully and expected the polling percentage to be around 70 per cent in the State. Elaborate arrangements were in place to ensure there were no complaints and inconvenience, he added. Polling began at 7 am amid tight security and will end by 6 pm, barring a few places classified as sensitive where it will conclude by 4 pm. Over 3.31 crore voters including over 1.66 crore female voters and first time voters of over 9.20 lakh are expected to exercise their franchise at 35, 356 polling stations across the state, where the fate of 525 candidates will be decided The counting of votes will be taken up on June 4 nationwide.
