Mandya, Sep 12 (Reporter) Tension at Nagamangala in Karnataka's Mandya district was brought under control on Thursday following violent clashes during a Ganesha Chaturthi procession the previous night. The unrest, which resulted in the burning of shops and vehicles, led to the detention of 52 individuals. The situation remains tense but stable, with no new incidents reported. Prohibitory orders are in place until 14 September, and approximately 600 police personnel, including members of the Karnataka State Reserve Police, have been deployed to ensure peace and order. In response to the violence, educational institutions in Mandya were closed on Thursday. However, Deputy Commissioner Kumar confirmed that schools and colleges will resume normal operations on Friday. The clashes erupted during the Ganesha procession, prompting the police to intervene, and resort to a lathi-charge. There were reports of stone-pelting and significant property damage. According to the district administration, 20 shops and eight vehicles were set ablaze during the unrest. The violence was contained to a specific area of the town. Mandya district in-charge Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy is actively coordinating with local police and has briefed Home Minister G Parameshwara on the situation. A peace meeting is scheduled to help restore calm. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy criticised the local police for failing to provide adequate protection and attributed the violence to the Congress party's "appeasement policy."
