Tight security arrangements in South TN ahead of Independence Day

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Aug 14 (Reporter) Security measures have been tightened in Southern districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, barely a day ahead of the 78th Independence Day celebrations. The entire 1076 miles-long South-eastern coastline of the State comes under blanket security cover by the Indian Navy in coordination with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Coastal Security Group (CSG) of Tamil Nadu Marine Police to prevent any infiltration bid via sea route by subversive elements. Though there is no Intelligence input about security threat, it is a routine affair that the war ships and offshore patrol vessels of Indian maritime forces were patrolling the Indian waters along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) off Rameswaram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari coasts, police sources said here on Wednesday. Besides, the air surveillance by Dornier aircraft was also intensified as part of the security arrangements. Police sources said here that heightened security cover has been put in place at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) at Kudankulam and Indian Space Research Organization Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tirunelveli district, V.O.Chidambaranar Port at Thoothukudi, airports at Tiruchirapalli, Madurai and Thoothukudi, besides the major railway stations, bus stands, railway over bridges and all the vital installations in Southern districts. Security beefed up at the World renowned Sri Ramanatha Swamy Temple at Rameswaram, Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai, Lord Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Tiruchendur, Arulmigu Dandayudhapani Swami Temple at Palani Hills in Dindigul district and other important places of worship. The Indian maritime forces have also stepped up surveillance in 21 unmanned Islands between India and Sri Lanka, besides an advisory was issued to the fishermen and people residing along the coastal villages to alert the security personnel if they found movement of strangers, the sources added.
