Kolkata, Nov 25 (Reporter) West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Monday said it would seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu after December 10 to urge her to approve the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Senior TMC leader and state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, after attending party's national working committee meeting, told reporters that on getting the appointment a 15-member all women delegation, comprising MPs and MLAs, would call on the President in New Delhi and appeal for her sanction for the said legislation.
The Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024 is an anti-rape bill that was passed by the state Assembly on September 3. It aims to address sexual violence by imposing the death penalty for rape that results in the victim's death or leaves them in a vegetative state.
The legislation also provides for a minimum sentence of life in prison for rape The bill was passed in response to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
State governor CV Ananda Bose sent the bill to the President for consideration, Bhatacharya said the party's women wing would also organise protest rallies on November 30 and December 1 on the issue of the Aparajita BIll.
The TMC's national working committee meeting was chaired by party supremo and state chief minister Mamata Banerjee and attended among others by party's general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Party's Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, who was jailed in the alleged cattle smuggling case at Tihar prison, also attended. He is now on bail.
