Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu) May 1 (Reporter) In a tragic incident, four workers were killed and eight others seriously injured, when a powerful explosion ripped apart a store room at a private blue metal quarry in this southern district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
Police said the explosion occurred at Aaviyur village near Kariapatti when a group of workers were unloading explosives like gelatin sticks and detonators from a load van to the store room used to store explosive stock.
The identity of the deceased were yet to be ascertained as the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition, the police added.
Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) personnel rushed to the site for rescue operation and also to clear unexploded explosives.
The explosion was so powerful that the people of surrounding villages complained that they felt mild tremors and even walls of a few houses developed cracks.
The residents of Aaviyur village staged an agitation on the busy Madurai-Thoothukudi national highway demanding immediate closure of the quarry.
Senior police and revenue officials pacified the villagers and assured them of suitable action after which the villagers withdrew their protest.
Virudhunagar district collector V.P.Jayaseelan and Superintendent of Police K.Feroze Khan visited the site and held an inquiry.
