TN Assembly adopts resolution against Tungsten mining

Chennai, Dec 9 (Reporter) The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday adopted an unanimous resolution opposing the Tungsten mining project in Madurai district awarded Hindustan Zinc and urged the Centre to withdraw it, even as Chief Minister M K Stalin declared it would be stalled at any cost. Apart from demanding the withdrawal of the mining rights awarded to the company, the resolution also urged the Centre not to award any mining rights to any firm without the consent of the concerned State Government. The resolution, moved by Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, was adopted by voice vote after heated debate between the ruling DMK and the main Opposition AIADMK. Later, Speaker M.Appavu announced that the resolution was passed unanimously. The issue generated a lot of heat in the House and witnessed frequent interventions from the Chief Minister and Mr Duraimurugan. Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanswami accused the government for not acting on the issue for the last ten months after the Centre had intimated it and the DMK had not exert enough pressure on the Centre as it concerned the livelihood of the people of that region. He said if the DMK government had intimated it that time itself (10 months back), it could have been stopped by now and sought to know why it delayed. Mr Stalin intervened and said the DMK members had raised the issue in Parliament and asserted that his government would stall it any cost. "A long as I am the Chief Minister, the Tungsten mining project will not be allowed in the State", and reiterated it time and again during the debate. He said if a situation arose allowing the Tungsten mining project, he would not remain as Chief Minister. "If a situation arises wherein the Tungsten project should be allowed, I will not remain as Chief Minister", he added. Mr Duraimurugan said the Centre stating that it has the auction rights was an affront on the self-respect of the State and said the auction rights was vested with the state government only. He also said the Chief Minister had repeatedly stated that the project would not be allowed in the State and said this government would stop it any cost. Floor leaders of various parties also spoke on the resolution opposing the Tungsten mining project at Arittapatti in Madurai district which is a notified Bio-Diversity Heritage site, and pledged their support to it...////...
