TN: Fire breaks out at women hostel, 2 killed

Madurai (Tamil Nadu) Sep 12 (Reporter) Two women teachers suffocated to death and three others hospitalised with burn injuries, after a fire broke out in an unregistered working women’s hostel at Katrapalayam locality near the busy Periyar Bus Stand here early on Thursday. Police said the fire was reported around 0450 hours, after a mini refrigerator exploded in one of the rooms at Visaka Women’s Hostel located at the first floor of a decades-old building and within about half an hour the fire and thick black smoke engulfed the building. The hostel has been functioning at the first and second floors of the two-story building. While some of the inmates of the hostel managed to escape through the narrow footsteps, the others were trapped on the roof terrace. The inmates on the second floor were stranded due to darkness owing to power failure. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot, extinguished the fire and rescued the trapped inmates from the second floor and roof terrace. The bodies of Parimala Soundari (52) and Saranya (32) were retrieved from the room. The hostel warden, J Pushpa (65) was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for burn injuries, while two other inmates were admitted to a private hospital for shortness of breath as they inhaled black smoke. District Collector M S Sangeetha, who visited the hostel, told newsmen that the city corporation had served a notice to the building owner in October, last year itself to vacate and demolish the building, as it was weak and unsafe posing a threat to public safety. The district administration would launch a drive to demolish dilapidated buildings, she said. Thideer Nagar police have registered a case and arrested Inba Jegadeesan, owner of the hostel...////...
