Ramanathapuram (Tamil Nadu), Sep 17 (Reporter) The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) apprehended three Sri Lankan nationals for straying into Indian waters off Thondi coast, late on Monday night.
Police sources said here on Tuesday that an ICG patrol vessel noticed a boat with three crew members on board, moving suspiciously in Indian waters around 20 nautical miles off the Thondi coast in Ramanathapuram district.
The boat along with three crew members were brought to Indian Coast Guard Station (ICGS) at Mandapam and later handed over to the Coastal Security Group of Tamil Nadu Marine police for interrogation.
The three member crew identified themselves as Sri Lankan nationals and their boat was drifted to Indian waters due to strong winds.
However, police investigation revealed that the Sri Lankans entered into Indian waters to collect unspecified contraband from unknown persons for smuggling to Lanka.
The Marine police registered a case against the trio and remanded them to judicial custody...////...
