Chennai, June 26 (Reporter) The toll in the spurious liquor tragedy in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu
rose to 63 on Wednesday with the death of three more people, even as 74 affected people were
discharged after treatment, while the National Commission for Women (NCW) commenced its
probe.
The deaths were reported at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem and JIPMER in Puducherry today morning.
Reports received here said while 32 people died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and
Hospital; 22 at the Salem Government Hospital, four at the Government Villupuram Medical College
and Hospital; and five at JIPMER.
A total of 88 persons, including three women are undergoing treatment in hospitals.
A total of 74 people, including two women and a transgender have been discharged after
treatment.
A total of 21 people were arrested so far in connection with the tragedy.
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident based
on media reports and issued notice to the State government seeking a detailed report.
The National Commission for Women too has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident based
on media reports and appointed its Member and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar to look into the matter.
In a post on X, it said the NCW has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports stating that six
women have died in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi after consuming spurious liquor.
"The Commission has constituted a three-member Inquiry Committee, led by NCW Member
@khushsundar to look into the matter", it said.
Meanwhile, Ms Khushbu Sundar-led committee visited Kallakurichi and met police and other officials and collected details about the incident, today.
They also visited the hospital and met the affected people.
NCW posted "NCW inquiry committee led by Member Khushbu Sunder in Tamil Nadu, Kallakurichi
met the officials today at the local Police station and District Social Welfare officers. FIR and interim
reports were collected. They Visited hospitalized victims and sought PM reports. Checked on 10
victims' families about compensation and counseling."
"Total arrest so far is 21 and 44 families have been given compensation of Rs 10 lakhs each", it said, sharing photos of their visit in the social media...////...
