TN: Petrol bombs hurled at theatre screening Amaran movie

Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), Nov 16 (Reporter) Two unidentified miscreants hurled three petrol bombs at a theatre screening actor Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Tamil movie ‘Amaran’ at Melapalayam in this Southern district of Tamil Nadu early on Saturday. Police said the petrol bombs hurled at Alangar Cinemas exploded at the entrance. None injured and no damage was caused to the theatre in the attack. CCTV footage recovered by police from the adjacent building shows two men hurling petrol bombs and running away quickly from the spot. Senior police officials visited the spot and held an inquiry. Based on the CCTV footage, police have launched a probe to establish the identity of the miscreants and to arrest them. This is the first attack on a theatre screening Amaran movie, amid the ongoing protests by Muslim organizations, including the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) against portrayal of Muslims in a negative light and as anti-nationals. Following this, police protection was ordered for all theatres screening Amaran movies across Tamil Nadu. The movie produced by actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan’s Raj Kamal Films International, was based on the life and martyrdom of slain Indian Army Major, Mukund Varadharajan, who was killed in a military operation against terrorists at Shopian in Kashmir during April 2014.
