Mayiladuthurai, Feb 15 (Reporter) Two youths, including an engineering student, were stabbed to death, while another injured in a brutal attack by three bootleggers at Muttam village under Perambur police limits in Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu late on Friday night.
Police said here on Saturday that the deceased were identified as K.Harish (25) and B.Hari Sakthi (20), a third year engineering student.
The injured youth K.Ajay (19) was treated at Mayiladuthurai government hospital.
Though the police claimed that the double murder was a fall out of personal enmity between M.Moovendan (24), a bootlegger and R.Dinesh (28) both residents of North Street in Muttam village, the family members of the deceased alleged that the issue related to sale of illicit arrack in the village.
Dinesh and Moovendan clashed with each other after a heated altercation on February 13. The locals intervened and separated them.
In the backdrop, Moovendan and his accomplices M.Thangadurai (28) and R.Rajkumar (34) attempted to assault Dinesh in an inebriated condition on Friday night.
When Harish, Hari Sakthi and Ajay attempted to save their friend Dinesh from the attack, the accused stabbed them with knives and escaped from the spot.
While Harish died on the spot, Hari Sakthi succumbed to stab injuries on the way to the hospital.
Tension flared up in the aftermath of the double murder, with a mob torching the houses of the bootleggers and setting fire to a tent in front of one of the houses.
Mayiladuthurai Superintendent of Police, G.Stalin rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators.
Police swung into action and arrested all the three accused in the wee hours of Saturday.
A large number of police men were deployed in and around Muttam village as a precautionary measure to prevent any further backlash.
