Hyderabad, July 13 (Reporter) Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Senior Vice President G Niranjan strongly condemned the BJP government’s decision to observe June 25th as Samvidhan Hathya Divas to remember the imposition of Emergency.
Speaking to the press at Gandhi Bhavan on Saturday, Niranjan accused the Modi government of using the Emergency issue to distract from its own failures. He noted that 50 years have passed since the imposition of the Emergency in the country.
Mentioning the Emergency after a generational gap clearly indicates the BJP's apprehension about the Congress party, he said. Niranjan pointed out that the BJP did not achieve a majority in the Lok Sabha elections despite leveraging the Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue.
Modi, who has criticized the alliance of India as "Tukde Tukde" parties, has himself come to power for the third time with the support of similar alliances, Niranjan added. Despite Modi's position as Prime Minister, Niranjan asserted that the people believe the real victors are Congress and other I.N.D.I.A. parties.
Irked by Rahul Gandhi's speech in the Lok Sabha, the BJP is attempting to attack the Congress party using the Emergency issue, he claimed. Niranjan also noted that the Emergency was supported by Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray and the RSS at the time.
In the 1977 elections, Md Indira Gandhi's Congress party lost. However, addressing a public meeting in Yavatmal, Maharashtra on January 24, 1978, Indira Gandhi stated, “Those responsible for the mistakes during the Emergency are not coming forward to take responsibility, but I will take responsibility.”
The Congress party won the Lok Sabha elections in 1980, and Indira Gandhi was sworn in as Prime Minister on January 14th. Niranjan suggested that this day should be celebrated as Democracy Restoration Day.
The people of the country voted in favour of Indira Gandhi five years after the imposition of Emergency, reposing their faith in her leadership, which indicates their forgiveness for the events during the Emergency period, he asserted.
Niranjan claimed the BJP fails to recognize this fact and is trying to discredit the Congress party after 50 years. However, he expressed confidence that the people of the country will teach the BJP a lesson in the upcoming elections in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and other states...////...
