Train accident : Stranded passengers sent by another train

Chennai, Oct 12 (Reporter) All the passengers of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express train, which collided with a stationary goods train at Kavaraipettai near here last night, were sent to Darbhanga in a special train on Saturday. In all 19 passengers were injured. While three of them suffered fractures and admitted to government Stanley Medical College hospital in Chennai, six of them with simple injuries were treated at Ponneri Government hospital. The injured passengers were given ex-gratia as per norms. Southern Railway sources all the passengers were taken to Chennai by an EMU train. The railways arranged food and stay for them last night. Later, they left for Darbhanga by a special train today morning. The special train from Dr MGR Chennai Central left for Dharbanga today with over 1800 passengers onboard. The Southern Railway General Manager have ordered high level probe into the accident. Meanwhile, Southern Railway in a release said restoration works were continuing in the accident spot. It said following the unfortunate incident involving the rear end collision of Mysuru-Dharbanga Bagmati Express and a goods train at Kavaraipettai, the restoration efforts are being carried out with maximum urgency and precision to ensure the safety of tracks, signals and other operational aspects. Southern Railway is working in close collaboration with all relevant authorities and agencies to handle the situation with the utmost care. Key agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Department, State Police, RPF, and GRP personnel have been mobilized for the rescue operations, actively working at the site to handle the situation. More than 500 personnel are on the ground, contributing to the rescue effort. As part of the operation, Southern Railway has deployed 5 heavy earth movers, 3 JCBs, 140-ton crane (2 Nos.) from Tondiarpet, Heavy Duty Re-railing equipment for re-railing the derailed coach, Accident Relief Train from Tondiarpet Marshalling Yard, A Self-Propelled Accident Relief Train (SPART) equipped with Emergency equipment, Medical facilities, Communication Systems and skilled personnel for fast-tracking rescue and relief operations. Five Medical Relief Teams led by Additional Divisional Medical Officers, Chief Nursing Superintendent, Hospital Assistants, Pharmacists and other para-medical staff were also deployed. The derailed coaches which can be re-railed were re-railed, while other coaches which could not be re-railed were removed from the mainline track in order to restore the track. Lighting arrangements and videography are being coordinated by Southern Railway's Mechanical and Electrical Departments to ensure continuous monitoring of operations. The relief efforts are being conducted under close supervision of the General Manager to ensure timely completion. Earlier today, Mr A.M. Chowdhary, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bengaluru conducted statutory inspection at the accident site assisted by the Senior officials of Southern Railway. Of the four lines at Kavaraipettai, the UP line and UP Loop line are expected to be restored tonight. The other two lines are expected to be restored by early tomorrow morning.
