Kolkata, July 21 (Reporter) The ruling Trinamool Congress is observing Martyrs' Day on Sunday to remember the death of 13 people during a protest against the then CPI(M)-led Left government in 1993.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said July 21 is an emotive milestone and an integral part of Bengal's public culture.
" Tomorrow comes another 21st (of) July! 21st July is a blood-soaked day in the history of Bengal. 13 lives were brutally taken away by the repressive regime of CPI( M) on this day in 1993," Banerjee said on her X Handle on Saturday.
" I lost 13 of my co-fighters on this day in my battle against repression. 21st July is therefore an emotive milestone for us. 21st July is an integral part of Bengal's public culture today.
" We remember those heroic martyrs every year on this historic day with love and respect. With them, we also remember all who have sacrificed their lives in movements for our country and fellow human beings," Banerjee, the TMC chairperson continued.
" Simultaneously we observe this day as 'Ma- Mati- Manush Divas', and dedicate our democratic electoral victories to the people of West Bengal. There lies another abiding significance of the day. Tomorrow,
to this Martyrs' Day cum Ma- Mati- Manush Divas programme at Esplanade," she said.
" I invite all of you ( to) in Bengal. Like every year, this year too, I trust, our congregation will get meaning through your eager participation in the collective homage to the martyrs. As I wrote in a poem: "21st July is soaked with blood and tears Tributes galore in remembrance of the martyrs." she concluded.
Party supremo Mamata Banerjee will address a huge gathering for the first time since the party secured a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections (29 seats out of 42) and Assembly bypolls (four).
TMC state president Subrata Bakshi launched the setting up of the makeshift structure by breaking a coconut during ‘Khunti Puja’ in front of Victoria House on Monday. Three stages are being set up. The main stage is 52 feet in length and 24 feet in width. The top leaders of the party, MPs, MLAs and ministers are seated on the
main stage while another stage is coming for the councillors.
Party's national general secretary Abishek Banerjee also returned to the city on Friday to attend the July 21 rally. He will also deliver his speech as in the past years, said a source.
July 21st represents the courage and defiance against tyranny; a story of the people, by the people and for the people.
On this #ShahidDibas, as we honour our martyrs, we pledge to relentlessly fight for the rights of the people.
I deeply thank and honour the people of Bengal for showing the Bangla Birodhis, time and again, that Bengal will never bow or surrender under any circumstances.
Jai Hind! Jai Bangla!
