Agartala, July 14 (Reporter) The dawn-to-dusk general strike on Sunday called by the opposition CPI-M protesting against the murder of its Zilla Parishad candidate in South Tripura Badal Shil (49) in the ensuing three-tier Panchayat poll has no much impact in the state.
The train movement to and from Sabroom (the southern end) to Dharmanagar (Northern end) of Tripura was normal, although vehicular movement in the state was marginal and most of the markets were closed. The administration deployed extra force in Belonia and Rajnagar, South Tripura, to prevent any further escalation.
The CPI-M State Secretary, Jitendra Chaudhury, alleged BJP cadres attacked a procession of CPI-M in the Rajnagar Motor Stand area in Belonia, South Tripura, on Friday when it was proceeding towards the BDO office for a deputation. Heavily armed miscreants hit Shil’s head and upper portion of the body with a sharp cutter in the procession in broad daylight.
Several others received serious injuries in the attack, but the attackers fled away when CPI-M workers raised a counterattack. Shil was taken to a local hospital and later shifted to AGMC in a critical condition.
However, the BJP opposed the strike while condemning the attack on Badal Shil and others. Party State Secretary Devid Debbarma said, “We don’t believe any BJP worker is involved in such a crime, as our party doesn’t believe in violence and attacks. We hope the police will take appropriate action against the perpetrators.”
“Under CM Saha, police and administration are functioning independently, and neither party nor the government indulge in any illegal or criminal act, which oppositions also admitted in earlier occasions,” Debbarma added.
Besides CPI-M, Congress also threatened to launch agitation against the government as the state election commission and police were unable to resist the violence of BJP cadres against the opposition. Soon after the election schedule was declared, BJP goons resorted to attacks across the state on opposition party workers and leaders.
“After CM told his party cadres that to win 100 percent seats of Panchayat, the BJP goons’ electrified and resorted violence across the state. They openly threatened the opposition leaders not to go for submission of nomination and so far in the last three days, at least eight incidents of attacks on oppositions were reported in different areas in the presence of police, but no action,” alleged Congress state president Ashish Kumar Saha.
There was a perception that under Dr. Saha’s rule, the election will be peaceful and democratic, and he demonstrated it in the last three subsequent elections, but this time he took a different role and has yet to make any statement against his party leaders or direct police to arrest the culprits, he pointed out.
The law and order situation in Tripura has worsened in the last few weeks, and the Chief Minister became a mute spectator. Saha alleged and added, “The BJP has realised the people of Tripura don’t want them anymore, and out of this fear, the party adopted violence as a tool and resorted to attacks on the opposition, but we will not allow them to continue this.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Saha issued a stern warning against any form of violence, unrest, or unruly behaviour during the election period...////...
