Agartala, Feb 28 (Reporter) Two Tripura residents were sentenced to life imprisonment for two separate cases of their wives' murder in North Tripura and Khowai districts. In the first case, the North Tripura District Sessions Court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife following domestic violence in 2018. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict and ordered him to serve an additional five years in jail if he fails to pay the fine. The convict, Swapan Kumar Nath, killed his wife Rikta Nath (19) in 2018 after subjecting her to physical and mental torture since her marriage in 2016. The police had registered a case against Swapan Kumar Nath and his mother, Kumudini Nath, in December 2018 under Section 302/34 IPC (murder with common intention) and Section 498(A) IPC (cruelty by husband or his relatives). After six years of trial, the court found both the accused guilty. Although Swapan Kumar Nath received the maximum punishment, his mother was awarded three years of imprisonment for her role in the crime. In another case in Khowai district and sessions court, a man who murdered his wife over dowry demands in 2017 was sentenced to life imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the convict, failing which he would have to serve an additional three months in jail. According to the report, the convict, Manojit Sutradhar, had married Chayanika Das in 2010. She was working as a supervisor of the Asha project at the time of marriage. The couple lived happily for a year, but then Sutradhar and his family started harassing and abusing Chayanika for more dowry. They also demanded cash from her father's house. On April 12, 2017, Sutradhar informed Chayanika’s father that she was very ill and asked him to visit her. When Chayanika’s relatives reached her husband's house in East Sonatala village under Khowai police station, they found her dead in bed. Her father lodged a complaint against Sutradhar, his mother Bina, and his brother Indrajit for killing his daughter. The police registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including dowry death and murder, and arrested the accused. They later got bail from the court. The police submitted the charge sheet in the case in October 2017. Altogether, 18 witnesses testified for the prosecution in the trial. The judge of the Khowai District Court, Shankari Das, found Sutradhar guilty of murdering his wife and pronounced the verdict today.
