Bengaluru, Jan 29 (Reporter) A tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Wednesday morning claimed the lives of two pilgrims from Karnataka's Belagavi.
The deceased have been identified as Jyoti Hattaravath (50) and her daughter Megha Hattaravath, who had travelled to the religious gathering with a group of pilgrims.
According to eyewitness accounts, the stampede occurred as a massive crowd gathered for the sacred ritual bath, leading to a chaotic situation. The victims, part of a 13-member group organised by Sairatha Travel Agency, got separated due to the surging pilgrims. Attempts by their family members to reach them proved futile, as their mobile phones became unreachable.
Relatives in Belagavi expressed distress over the incident, stating that they were unaware of the tragedy until later in the day. Jyoti’s brother, Gururaj Hudhar, confirmed that the duo had been rushed to a private hospital in Prayagraj following the stampede but succumbed to their injuries due to lack of timely medical assistance.
The stampede left over 50 people injured, many of whom have been admitted to nearby hospitals. Authorities are yet to release the identities of all those hospitalised. Meanwhile, officials from the travel agency coordinated efforts to locate missing members of their group, only to learn that Jyoti and Megha had lost their lives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic incident, stating that he is in constant touch with the Uttar Pradesh government regarding relief measures. "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives at the Maha Kumbh Mela. My thoughts are with the bereaved families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured," the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
The Prayagraj district administration has launched an inquiry into the incident, with officials emphasising the need for enhanced pilgrim management and safety measures.
