Haveri, Jan 14 (Reporter) Haveri district police have arrested two more persons in the alleged Hangal gangrape case. This was confirmed by Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar in a press conference here on Sunday.
The apprehended persons have been identified as 19-year-old Mohammed Hussein Walikar and 23-year-old Imran Basheer Jakkinakatte. One of them was arrested in Bankapur and another in Davangere, he said.
As of now, the total number of accused arrested in the case is six. Other accused, who were arrested on January 11, are - Aftab Maqbul Ahmed (24), Madarsab Mohammed Isaq (23), and Abdul Khader Jaffarsab (28).
Another accused Mohammed Saif Abdul Sattar Savikeri met with a road accident and is undergoing treatment at the District Hospital in Haveri. He will be arrested upon his discharge from hospital.
All the accused, however, have no links with any organisation, SP Anshu Kumar said.
A case has been registered against the accused persons under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting), 448 (house trespass), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty) of the CrPC.
The accused also have been booked under sections 354(b) (compelling a woman to be naked), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Meanwhile, district in-charge minister Shivanand Patil vehemently condemned the crime and said that none will be spared. He, however, blamed the hotel owner for not informing about the incident on the day crime, resulting in delayed action by the police.
He also appealed not to politicise the Hangal gangrape and assured of giving justice to the victim.
Karnataka State Minorities Commission Abdul Azeem told reporters that the police have been requested to form an SIT-like team to investigate the case.
Azeem also met the victim via video conference and assured her of taking up the issue of providing employment and shelter with the state government.
Karnataka BJP women’s wing led by its president Manjula and vice-president Malavika Avinash visited Haveri and expressed dismay over the government for not forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by now to conduct thorough investigation into the case.
They also alleged that the government deliberately shifted the victim to Sirsi on the pretext of investigation before the BJP delegation was scheduled to meet her.
Malavika also alleged that the lone woman minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar has gone missing after the registration of FIR on gangrape. She said women are no longer safe under the Congress rule as rape, extortion and violence against women have increased...////...
