Undertrial shot dead in encounter in North Bengal

Islampur, Jan 18 (UNI ) An undertrial, identified as Sajjak Alam, carrying an award of Rs 2 lakh, was shot dead in an encounter while trying to flee to Bangladesh, official sources said on Saturday. A medic at Islampur Mohokuma Hospital said the undertrial was brought here around 8 am today with the marks of three shots, including one on his chest. Police in the northern district had announced a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh on information of his whereabouts of Sajjak Alam, who was an undertrial. He fired at and critically wounded two policemen in Panjipara of the district on Wednesday late afternoon and fled. It was not yet clear from which area of the porous border the undertrial was trying to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh. Sources said one Abdul Hossain, an associate of Sajjak Alam. had handed over a pistol to the undertrial in the court during hearing and from this weapon he attacked policemen, an ASI and other a Constable of Goalpokhar police station. Police said the two injured policemen — Deben Baishya, an assistant sub-inspector, and Nilkanta Sarkar, a constable were shifted to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital...////...
