Chennai, Jan 2 (Reporter) Rejecting Opposition PMK's plea for staging a protest against the alleged sexual assault of a girl student at the state-run Anna University, the Madras High Court slammed the political parties for politicising the issue. Hearing a mention made by PMK Advocate Wing leader K Balu seeking permission for the Party's Women's Wing to stage a protest demonstration in front of the University campus as police rejected their plea, Mr Justice P Velmurugan dismissed the plea and sought to know why the political parties without devoting true attention towards women's security, was trying to politicise the Anna University sexual assault case. Coming down heavily on political parties for holding protests only to garner media attention, the Judge said "all of us should be ashamed off as such incident has happened. "Everyone is trying to politicise the issue", he observed. Stating that the Madras High Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident, the Judge said police have registered a case and are investigating and that organising protest over this incident was not acceptable. "Your protests on this issue is just for publicity", the Judge observed and regretted that the media, without realising its responsibility, were indulging in debates on the incident for the last 10 days. Making strong observations, Justice Velmurugan said "instead of serving as a wake up call to introspect why society as a whole continued to subjugate women and unleash atrocities against them, this incident is being politicised with no concern". Noting that he was expressing his anguish not as a Judge but as a human being, the Judge said "Collectively all of us should be ashamed for this incident and crimes against women". The Judge pointed out that a Division Bench had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising three women IPS officers to probe the case and said "If there is no proper investigation, this court knows how to deal with it. Conducting protests will not help in any way, he added. Meanwhile, the PMK staged the protest leading to the detention of Women's Wing leader Ms Sowmya Anbumani, wife of PMK President and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Anbumani Ramadoss and others. Police also registered a case against them for holding protests without permission...////...
