Hyderabad, May 4 (Reporter) Following the closure of Rohit Vemula's suicide case by the police due to insufficient evidence against the accused, Radhika Vemula, the mother of the deceased, met with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday.
During the meeting, she appealed to the Chief Minister for justice in her son's case. Assuring her, the Chief Minister pledged to initiate a re-investigation to ensure justice.
In light of Radhika Vemula's doubts about the police report, the authorities decided on Friday to reopen the case for further investigation.
In response to the case's closure, student organizations at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) staged a protest on Friday, condemning the state police's decision. They alleged that the police failed to thoroughly examine the facts before clearing the accused.
It's important to recall that Rohit Vemula, a 26-year-old PhD scholar, tragically ended his life in his hostel room at Hyderabad Central University on January 17, 2016. His demise sparked widespread protests, highlighting issues of discrimination, particularly against Dalits, with the Modi government facing accusations of being anti-Dalit.
The closure report had cleared accused: Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani, then Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya, Member of Legislative Council N Ramachander Rao, Vice Chancellor of University of Hyderabad Appa Rao, and leaders from Bharatiya Janata Party’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad
