Chennai, July 10 (Reporter) Close on the heels of the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy, seven people,
who consumed liquor smuggled in from Puducherry, were hospitalised after they complained
of vomitting and dizziness at Poorikudisai village in Vikravandi, where polling in the Assembly
bye-election, was being held, on Wednesday.
However, five of them, were discharged after treatment at the Government Villuppuram
Medical College Hospital (GVMCH) at Mundiyambakkam, reports received here said.
Two others, who were habitual drinkers and were suffering from jaundice, were undergoing
treatment at the hospital, reports received here said.
The Villupuram district administration has declared dry days for three days from July 8 to 10
in the entire district in view of the bypoll, necessitated following the death of sitting DMK MLA
N Pugazhendi.
Since all the state-owned TASMAC retail liquor outlets, including bars, were shut for three days,
the liquor sachets were purchased in Puducherry and was brought in the bus by a man who had
illegally sold it.
According to TV reports, the man who sold the liquor sachets was identified as Prabhu.
He had illegally sold the liquor sachets to seven people illegally, making use of the dry
days, with a view to make a fast buck.
One of them Sakthivel vomitted and swooned after consuming the liquor and he was
rushed to the GVMCH.
Sakthivel had told the police that he had purchased liquor from Prabhu.
Based on the information, police detained Prabhu and questioned him. He confessed
that he had sold it to seven people.
Police immediately identified the six others, who had consumed the liquor, and took
them to hospital for treatment.
Since their condition was stable, five of them were discharged after treatment.
Police have registered a case against Prabhu.
The incident comes at a time when the State was yet to recover from the Kallakurichi
spurious liquor tragedy last month that claimed more than 60 lives...////...
