Wayanad landslide toll rises to 391

Wayanad, Aug 5 (Reporter) The death toll in the landslides that hit Kerala's Wayanad district shot up to 391 on Monday, even as 186 persons still remained missing, sources said/ Reports said six bodies were recovered from Mundakkai and Chooralmala during the search operations during the day. Revenue Minister K. Rajan has said the search operations will continue until the last missing person is found in the landslide-destroyed area. The search operation between Soojipara and Pothukkal will intensify tomorrow. The mass burial of 31 bodies and 158 human body parts from the unidentified bodies was conducted after an all-religious faith prayer on 64 cents of land provided free of charge by Harrison Plantation Limited at Puthumala on Monday. The cremation was conducted after taking DNA samples and other marks from the bodies. The Revenue Department has decided to acquire 50 cents of land near the burial ground set up at Puthumala for the cremation of the remaining bodies. The first batch of eight unclaimed bodies were buried late at night at Puthumala. Puthurmala is the region that experienced hit-and-miss landslides in 2019. At present, 2514 survivors, including three pregnant women, are residing in 77 relief camps at Meppadi Panchayat. As many as 4833 people were affected by the landslide in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Attamala areas in 10, 11, and 12 wards of Meppadi panchayath on July 30. LSGD minister M. B. Rajesh has said that all the lost documents and certificates of the survivors will be provided with assistance from the LSGD department. The mobile police patrolling will be strengthened in the landslide-affected areas tomorrow to avoid unnecessary visits by people. Education Minister V Sivan Kutty will arrive at Wayanad to discuss the issues affecting students in the area. Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseedharan has said the comments of Union Forest Minister Bhupendra Yadav that illegal mining and encroachment carried out under the support of local bodies caused the Wayand landslide are "baseless". Army Major General V. T. Mathew, who led the military rescue and search operations for the last six days, returned to his head office in Bangalore on Monday...////...
