Wayanad landslides claim lives of 36 school students

Wayanad, Aug 6 (Reporter) Thirty six school students have died in the July 30 landslides in Kerala's Wayanad district, Education Minister V Sivan Kutty said on Tuesday. Sivan Kutty said 17 students were still missing, while five students were in hospital. The Minister said classes will resume at Meppadi Government Higher Secondary School once the relief camp for the survivors was shut down. Talking to newspersons after the review meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee, he said the classes will start within 20 days. Altogether 316 students were housed in ten relief centres, while 61 students have shifted to their relatives' houses. The rest 166 students were living at their own houses under Meppadi Panchayat. He also said 276 students lost their text and notebooks, while 438 students lost their study materials, as also their uniforms and bags. Temporary education facilities will be arranged for the 465 students studying in standard one to ten at Vellarimala GVHSS. Such facilities will also be arranged for students of Meppady GHSS, while 62 students of Mundakkai GLP school will be allowed to ttend their classes at the Gram panchayat-owned PMJ hall. The minister also said as per the instructions of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, immediate steps will be taken to ensure classes of the students are not disrupted. Representatives of the landslide-affected areas, teachers and Education Department officials attended the review meeting. He also said the government has appointed the Deputy Director of Education (DDE) as the nodal officer for the preparation of infrastructure facilities to reconstruct the two destroyed schools. The Director of Public Education (DPE) will supervise the work. Temporary education facilities will be provided to the 1890 students at Meppadi GVHSS. Sivan Kutty said the certificates lost in the landslides will be distributed directly to the students after organising a special camp in the coming days for preparing duplicates. Special vehicle arrangements will also be provided to the students to reach the school, and for this talks were held with Kerala State Road Transport Corporation.
