Kolkata, Aug 18 (Reporter) An unprecedented solidarity was witnessed on Sunday around the Salt Lake Stadium where the arch-rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal supporters, wearing maroon-green and red-yellow shirts, protested together against the alleged rape and murder of a young medic in a city hospital, even as the Durand Cup organiser abandoned scheduled derby match. Huge contingent of police set up barricades on the bypass near the stadium and used batons to disperse the assembly of the supporters, who defied the Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of CrPC) has been imposed from 1600 hours till midnight around the stadium. Police used batons and shield to disperse the football supporters, who shouted slogan "we want justice and only justice," even as many of the protesters were picked up in the police van. The protesters, however, forced the police to free the supporters after they surrounded the police van. In the century-old rivalry of the two premier football clubs of the country, who have many silverwares in their tent cupboards at Maidan, the arch-rivals decided to protest together against the crime on the 31-year-old medic and demand justice for R G Kar. The busy E M Bypass was literally seized by the protesting supporters and huge contingent of police barricaded the roads and suspended all the traffic. All India Football Federation president Kalyan Chaubey was seen among the football fans and was seen announcing to remain calm and protest peacefully. Many football fans told reporters if the administration has so much police forces then it could not organise the derby, which was the first of the season. "Bangal (East Bengal) Gati (Mohun Bagan) ektai swar (one voice), Bichar chai for RG Kar," rented the air around the stadium. Even the supporters from Mohammedan Sporting assembled with the black and white flags, protesting along with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan supporters together. The supporters also demanded resignation of Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee with a slogan "dabi ek dofa ek mukho montrir biday chai." Among the supporters there were many teenage girls, who protested against the police lathi charge on them.
