Kolkata, Sep 15 (Reporter) Weekend protest rallies and demonstrations returned to Kolkata on Sunday as agitators from different sections of society, including former defence officials, students, retired teachers and nursing staff from hospitals, braved heavy rain to demand justice for a woman doctor allegedly raped and murdered in R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Former students of the Purulia Sainik Schools, who retired from top posts in the Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, took out a rally from Jadavpur to Gol Park in south Kolkata. One of the retired defence officers, Ashish Banerjee said they were hopeful about the outcome of the Supreme court hearing, though the legal process in the country takes time. The former teachers and students of Calcutta Girls High School took out a massive rally from their school in the Wellington Square in Central Kolkata to Shyambazar in north Kolkata defying rains. One of the former teachers said they were demanding justice for the R G Kar Hospital as well as to awaken the government to ensure a safe and secured state for their next generations. Nursing staff from different hospitals assembled at Karunamoyee in east Kolkata to join doctors at Central Park onwards to Swastha Bhavan where the junior medics of the government hospital are on protest since Tuesday. The Kolkata branch of the Indian Dental Association also organised a protest in the city to demand justice for the deceased doctor. Responding to a call for organising "Maha Michil' on Sunday by the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, protest rallies virtually ruled the city to highlight the poor state of affairs in the state, especially ahead of the Supreme Court next hearing in murder case on Tuesday . The CBI on Sunday produced former RG Kar Hospital’s principal Sandip Ghosh and Tata Police station’s Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mondal at the Sealdah court seeking their custody up to September 17. The two were arrested by the federal agency on Saturday night accusing them of complicity to the crime of destruction of evidence. The CBI's counsel during the hearing alleged a large conspiracy, involving the two accused, in the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old lady medic. The probe agency told the court that the duo were in constant touch with each other over phone on the day doctor’s body was found. Both of them face allegations of evidence tampering and delay in registration of FIR. The protesters shouted slogans demanding justice as the two were taken into the court. In the morning the local people gathered outside the CGO Complex, carrying placards and posters, and shouted slogans demanding justice for the woman doctor and criticising the police for its handling of the investigation before the CBI took over the case...////...
